On a solo trip to Haiti back in 2016, I was riding on the back of a motorcycle headed to the town square, and as I sat there in traffic waiting, observing, and filming, my camera captured the sight of this woman. Her aura was like a lioness, focused and determined as she marched her child home with grandmother carrying the same stride behind them.
When re-imagining her on canvas, I decided to name her Valery for the strength that I saw in her eyes.
